Outgoing US Ambassador Expresses Optimism and Gratitude for Strong US-Cambodian Relations

PHNOM PENH, May 8, 2024 – Prime Minister Hun Manet welcomed Patrick Murphy, the outgoing US Ambassador to Cambodia, for a courtesy call at the Peace Palace.

During the meeting, Ambassador Murphy expressed his gratitude to the Prime Minister for the opportunity to bid farewell at the conclusion of his diplomatic tenure in Cambodia. He conveyed his optimism and appreciation for the deepening ties and cooperation between the United States and Cambodia during his term.

Ambassador Murphy highlighted the advancements made in various sectors including politics, economics, trade, education, health, and demining. He particularly thanked the Royal Government of Cambodia for its support in the POW/MIA search and demining efforts, acknowledging the pivotal role of the United States as a major donor to Cambodia.

Ambassador Murphy also mentioned ongoing and future cooperation initiatives, including Cambodia's hosting of a meeting on the Ottawa Convention by the end of 2024 and collaborations in defense, such as joint activities and military student exchange programs. He expressed confidence in the continuation of robust US-Cambodia cooperation under the leadership of the new Ambassador.

In response, Prime Minister Hun Manet expressed appreciation for Ambassador Murphy's dedicated efforts in strengthening bilateral relations and cooperation across various sectors. He emphasized Cambodia's commitment to enhancing ties with the United States and highlighted new policies aimed at improving the business environment to attract more investors, including those from the US.

As a token of appreciation, Hun Manet presented Ambassador Murphy with the Medal of Merit of Maha Sereywat. He assured the Ambassador of the Royal Government's readiness to further deepen cooperation in the new Ambassador's tenure, reaffirming Cambodia's consistent and sustainable foreign policy approach.

In conclusion, Prime Minister Hun Manet wished Ambassador Murphy success in his future endeavors and a safe journey back home.
